My brand new house ALMOST caught on FIRE!
Published: Mon, 04/11/16
If you've been following me for a while
you know that we just bought 4 acres
of land in Orlando Fl and we finally
built the house of our dreams.
I also built my mom a house right next
door to us on the same property. This
was our first week living there and
things were going great until just
yesterday.
At about 2:30 PM we took the dogs
out to play frisbee and we smelled fire.
I saw a plume of smoke in the
distance so I jumped in the truck to
see if I could find the fire.
It was about a mile away and I pulled
over to "face time" Melinda and show
her what was happening. Less than
15 minutes later we were being
evacuated by the police because the
fire had reached my street!
Huge flames and giant columns of
black smoke filled the air, fire trucks
raced in from all directions and police
cars began to block off access to our
neighborhood.
We quickly got the dogs to safety and
started grabbing whatever we could
throw in my truck, clothes, photgraphs,
whatever we could carry.
Suddenly I see fire engines coming up
my drive way then a bulldozer tearing
through my woods on the south side
and charging towards the flames on
the north.
Turns out that the fire burned through
20 acres and made its last stand on
OUR property. Orange County Fire
Rescue squads 80 & 83 came on our
property and bravely stood between
the fire and our home.

I took this pic as I started to crap my
pants. I though for sure that our house
would go up in flames. But no. They
literally stopped the fire right there on
our property line as I watched and
tried to help with my little garden hose.
By 6PM EST. the fire was fully
contained and people started
returning to their homes. I went and
shook hands with every firefighter
that I could find. I even took a selfie
with Ben and Mike of station 86:

Melinda and I learned a lot from this
experience. We learned how important
it is to BE PREPARED for these sorts
of emergencies.
Keep a small suitcase packed and
handy in case you gotta "grab and go".
Also, have a "bug out" plan. Its
impossible to predict every possible
scenario but if you have some sort of
a plan to follow and you practice it
you are more likely to stay calm and
work as a team effectively through an
emergency.
Lastly, be grateful of your local fire
rescue and EMS. These guys have a
tough job and they seldom ever get
a thank you.
To Your Success,
Omar & Melinda Martin
